A very interesting insite to the very sad set of buildings that greet visitors to Lincoln travelling by the A57. Old racecourse histories are fascinating; another not so well known racecourse was at Gatwick. It staged the 'Grand National' during the First World War, when Aintree was required by the War Office. The last 'National' held there in 1917, re-named 'The War Steeplechase', was won by Ernie Piggott, the grand father of a certain Lester Piggott, riding Poethlyn.
Racing ceased at Gatwick in 1944, rumour has it, because they lost too many days to fog. Funny then that the authorities decided it was a good place to build an international airport!

By the way, I walked the old Alexandra Palace pan handle circuit this evening (and got VERY muddy)....... also, can anyone remember the Northampton racecourse? The grandstand is still there (as in Derby) and is used as a restaurant..... racing nostalgia..... bring it on ;-)

You can still walk around the entire course which is great for a bit of a cross country run. The 8f straight used for the Lincoln Handicap has been cut by the A46 dual carriageway built in 1984(ish). The stable area is the car park for the nearby Carholme Golf course that lies behind the main grandstand - some holes are in the centre of the course.

There have been rumours of returning racing, specifically point-to-point racing to Lincoln Racecourse in the near future, which i hope is true as its walking distance for me!

Alan - it would be great if you could share the old plan with me illustrated above.

Wonderful piece of nostalgia and evocative history, Alan.
It is amazing how many former racecourses can still be traced even years on...
There is the old stand at Richmond, in an area now devoted to gallops, ditto Lewes in sussex.
And if you walk in Alexandra Park in North London, though the stands and other buildings have long since disappeared, you can still trace the hallowed turf of the old Frying Pan...
